It’s almost Thanksgiving which means the holiday season has officially kicked off. With Black Friday right around the corner and the December holidays close behind, I find myself wondering which gaming console will sell best this holiday season. This list excludes portable gaming devices, sorry. Check out our predictions for 2014 Christmas holiday game console sales.
The obvious choice for most, PS4 has been topping the charts this console generation. Projected to sell 17 million units by the end of the year, compared to Xbox One’s projected 11 million, Sony is in a very good position this holiday season.
With games like Little Big Planet 3, GTA V, and The Last of Us Remastered already released, and games like The Order: 1886 and Dying Light on the horizon in January and February, I believe Sony could be second if not first this holiday season.
The Xbox One has been trailing behind Sony’s PS4 ever since the console launched last year. Microsoft already dropped the price $50 by offering the console without the Kinect device earlier this year. With this holiday season Microsoft has temporarily lowered the price an additional $50 bringing the price to $350.
These $350 bundles are coming with games like Sunset Overdrive and Assassins Creed: Unity (which comes bundled with Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag as well), or you can pay $449 and get double the storage space and a custom Call of Duty Advanced Warfare console, controller, and game download.
With Sunset Overdrive being an exclusive for Xbox One, and the console being bundled with hot new games such as Assassin’s Creed: Unity for $50 cheaper than Sony’s PS4, Xbox One has a chance to turn things around and out perform Sony this holiday season.
Even though Nintendo released the Wii U a full year before Microsoft and Sony released their systems in 2013, it never really did too hot in the market. I believe that is going to change, at least for the holiday season.
The Wii U might not be as powerful as the the other two big consoles, but it is the cheapest. Don’t get me wrong, the price isn’t everything, but it doesn’t have to be when you figure in all the games.
Nintendo has always had great first party franchises, and with the two years since the Wii U’s release, they’ve accumulated a few must have titles to add to any gamers library. Games like Zombie U, New Super Mario Bros. U, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Pikmin 3, The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker HD, Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, Hyrule Warriors, and Super Smash Bros. are all exclusive to Nintendo.
I think they sit in a better position from a software perspective than the PS4 and Xbox One because I can’t think of any games that I really must have for the PS4 or Xbox One until next year, besides The Last of Us Remastered or Assassin’s Creed: Unity. Don’t get me wrong these consoles still have their exclusive titles, but nothing with such an established fanbase as mario kart, zelda, or super smash bros.
With the cheapest price point, best selection of first party games, and great variety in bundles I think the Wii U will sell the best out of the big three this holiday season. It’s a great system to own and compliments the other two big competitors nicely by offering games that can only be played on a nintendo console.
So there you have it, my prediction for the best selling game console this holiday season. I believe all three will do well, but I really think the Wii U will sell the most systems. Let us know what’s on your wishlist in the comments section below!
